The Inside Outing (Barron's Fables and Fantasies)
Published in School & Library Binding by Children's Book Press (December, 1988)
Authors: Elizabeth Laird, Olivia Madden, and Deborah Ward
Average review score:

A day at the beach
Elisabeth laird's The Inside outing Is somewhat of a generic children's book. Julie the main character gets up bright and early for a day of fun at the beach. To her dismay she discoves that the rain clouds above her house had a slitly differnt day planded for her. Never the less Julie and her friends decided not to let the weather get the best of them. Instead they use their imaginations and created their oun day of fun. I didn't particularly like this story and would have given it a lower score if it weren't for the presentation. I feel that the pictures really make the book what it is and without those pictures it would be just another childrens story.

The Internet Unleashed 1996
This is an excelent book for someone who wants to understand the internet. It is much better than the "idiots" type of manuals because it goes deeper into subjects, however, it is simple enought for first starters. It helped me a lot.

Jewish American Poetry: Poems, Commentary, and Reflections (Brandies Series in American Jewish History, Culture, and Life)
Published in Paperback by Brandeis Univ (July, 2000)
Authors: Jonathan N. Barron and Eric Murphy Selinger
Average review score:

The Poetry of a Diverse People
This is an anthology of the works of 26 contemporary Jewish American Poets. The format of the book, however, is somewhat unusual. Each of the poets in the book chose a single poem to be included and followed the poem with an essay or "commentary" about it. The commentarys themselves vary in form from a whimsical four line verse by Charles Bernstein to lengthy essays.

The poems vary in styles from very traditional verse to modern free poetry. As to be expected, the poets bring different convictions and perspectives to their appointed task of illustrating the variety and the purpose underling "Jewish American Poetry." As more than one poet and commentator points out, each of these words themselves will bear lengthy exploration: what is "American" what is "Jewish", possibly most importantly "what is poetry and why write it or read it". Many of the poems are reflections on Jewish tradition, family, the Holocaust, the pressures and challenges of modern materialistic secular (again, what is that?) culture, and, an apparently never-ending topic of debate, feminism. Woemen and their varied issues within Judaism and well represented in the choice of poets. The poets and commentaries vary widely in quality. My favorites include the poems of Anthony Hecht, Maxine Kumin, C.K. Williams, and Eleanor Winer though each reader will make his or her own choice.

In addition to the poems and commentaries, the book includes a good introduction by the editors and several essays. The essays vary in subject matter and quality. I found very helpful the essays by Steven Rubin and Michael Heller on the history of American poetry in the 20th Century and how the poetry written by American Jews both comments upon and takes issue with the broader trends in American poetry. Some of the feminist oriented essays were too shrill and tangentially related to the poems in the book for my liking and were also, perhaps, overly technical for people coming to poetry for the first time. There were essays on the Jewish mystical tradition, particularly the Shekhina or feminine aspect of God, but these essays seemed to have little directly to do with the poetry offered in the book. The essay on Yiddish poetry and the essays on the perils and virtues of translation were very good.

I would have rather seen more than one poem by each of the poets in the collection. As it is, the representation of each poet is too thin to give much an idea of the tenor of their work. As a related point, there is too much talk in the book and not enough poetry. The essays are useful to a degree, but I suggest that this book be read in conjunction with Steven Rubin's (the author of a good historical essay in the book) anthology of Jewish American poetry, Telling and Remembering, which includes a much more generous selection of poets and poems and less in the way of gratuitous or questionable essaying.

Keys to Interfaith Parenting (Barron's Parenting Keys Series)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (May, 1998)
Author: Iris M. Yob

Lots of food for thought.
If you and your spouse can sit down before having kids (even before getting married) and talk about religion it is a good thing. This book led to us really problem solving our day to day living between my husband and myself and our religions. This book was a great starting point for discussions.

I particularly liked the questions that provided a starting point for discussions. I also liked the stories of other couples and how they handled their differences. I liked the ideas that this book has for different ways to handle different religions.
The chapters are short and easy to read in one sitting.

One thing we learned was to focus on the similarities and go from there. We were also reminded that this is a multi cultural/mulit religion world and that to get along we need to learn to respect and understand other religions. Very good.

What a great way to start this type of discussion.

Fast-reading primer on common stocks
This primer on common stocks hits on all the key terms to know about when investing. Each key/chapter explains a particular topic such as "Fundamental Analysis", "Technical Analysis", "EPS", etc. The writing is clear and concise, though the plugs for Barron's get a little old. Overall, a great, inexpensive book to get you up-to-speed on investing in common stocks

Keys to Investing in Options and Futures (2nd Ed) (Barron's Business Keys)

Average review score:

Good review of options and futures trading
Good review of options and futures trading. Each section is just 2-3 (short) pages, usually with an example or two, which makes the book very easy to pick up and read a little at a time. Since each section is so short, it also serves as a useful quick reference.

For more detailed reading on options/futures trading, I'd suggest finding another book. Use this mainly for quick reference, or as a refresher.

Keys to Investing in Real Estate (Barron's Business Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (July, 2000)
Authors: Jack P. Friedman and Jack C. Harris
Average review score:

An informative little book!
This is a great book to start if you want to get into Real Estate Investing. The book is organized into 51 chapters/Keys that provide short but concise explanation of important real estate investing concepts. The discussions are to the point, succinct, and very easy to grasp. The points are put forward in such a straight forward manner that it is very easy to remember. Because of its small size, I've also found it to be a highly useful reference guide.

A few suggestions: Once you have grasped the concepts in this book, I would highly recommend Robert Campbell's book "Timing the Real Estate Market" to get a better sense of how the real estate market works. After that, Gary Eldred's book "Investing in Real Estate" to learn about negotiation techniques, financing options, finding deals etc. Finally, Andrew Tompos's "Analyzing Investment Properties" will give you an excellent knowledge on how to evaluate a real property by working through cash flow calculations etc.
